CHARACTER
Name: Levi
Canon: Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)
Age: It's a mystery, but despite his young appearance, the author has confirmed that Levi is surprisingly old. I guesstimate somewhere in his 30's, given his rank.
Timeline: Chapter 30, right after grabbing Eren from the clutches of the Female Type Titan.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality:

In many ways, Levi is something of a contradiction unto himself. He appreciates order and structure, but dislikes authority. He's something of an ass, staying standoffish and unapproachable for most people, but he has a deep respect and loyalty towards humanity, especially towards his squad. Despite his attitude towards basically everyone, his soldiers love him and literally follow him to their death. It's a little baffling, but it says something about Levi; an ass he may be, but he's obviously caring enough underneath it all for people to die for his cause.

He's shown that he is actually pretty compassionate. Levi overrides his neuroses about mess and filth to hold a dying soldier's hands at his last moments- to reassure him that his death wasn't meaningless. When Eren accidentally transforms into a Titan around Levi's squad, he instinctively understands that Eren didn't mean to; he just doesn't have control yet. He stands up for Eren when literally everyone else in the vicinity has weapons drawn and is screaming at him for the misstep. He might seem like an unfeeling bastard, but the reality (like everything with Levi), is that it's actually the opposite. Levi obviously cares enough to step in the way of danger for people he barely knows; Eren for one, but later even for (who he really only knows as Eren's friend) Mikasa as she disobeys his order to try and kill the Female Type Titan, injuring himself in the process.

Levi is rough around the edges, most likely due to his background as a thug. He has a crass way of talking and is prone to speaking his mind- he doesn't care if you dislike it, he's going to tell you exactly what he's thinking and you are just going to get what you get and like it that way. Sometimes he doesn't even realize what he's saying is rude. (Or maybe, he just doesn't care.) Levi realizes the authority he has, and in a lot of ways, he sort of abuses it in this context; after all, the only person higher than him is Erwin and he doesn't care how Levi talks. No one can tell him to stop. No one.

All in all, Levi is basically this: one giant piece of opposite-day pie. He's mean because he likes you.

Really.

Background:

Levi's background is vague and muddled, but getting clearer by the day. We don't know where he came from, but we do know that sometime in his youth, he was once living with a man and murderer for hire named Kenny Ackerman (which is where he got his last name). Presumedly, this man taught Levi how to fight and how to kill, but at some unknown point in time, he left Kenny to be on his own.

After he did, he came in contact with Isabel Magnolia and Farlan Church, who he led as a kind of gang leader. The three of them lived in the underground city with other impoverished people, but they all aspired to living on the surface. They went at it by any means necessary, even stealing 3DMG and becoming experts at it in order to help themselves achieve their goals. In the underground city where jobs are hard to come by, crime was their only option.

They created such a name for themselves that influential people from above heard about their skills. The three were hired by a noble to steal incriminating evidence that a Survey Corps officer named Erwin Smith had in his possession; in return, they'd get a large sum of money and a home on the surface. Levi thought it was bullshit but Farlan and Isabel leaped at the chance and Levi, who cared for them but always pretended he didn't, went with it.

Erwin, being the creepy bastard that he is, knew from the start-- but the benefits of their joining the Survey Corps outweighed the part where they were instructed to ruin his investigation and kill him. He went with it, pretending to be ignorant of the trio's goals, and forced Levi to get the team to join the Survey Corps ranks. The three resisted, but ultimately caved in order to complete their infiltration.

In the beginning it went well (the three were always naturals and took to horseback and blade work with the same ease they took 3DMG), it ended in disaster. Erwin, as already stated, knew from the beginning that they were out to get him. Levi made a critical choice that ended badly. And in the end, Isabel and Farlan were killed by Titans, leaving Levi alone.

At that point after their death, Levi very nearly killed Erwin. He was angry and hurt and struck by grief and killing Erwin, who was in his mind the source of all his problems, seemed like the best possible option. But Erwin literally caught the blade in his hand and gave Levi the dressing down of his life. Erwin was not the reason his friends were dead; the Titans were.

In the end, Levi realized that the Titans were Erwin's 'underground'. Where Levi, Isabel, and Farlan dreamed of living on the surface, Erwin dreamed of a world where the large expanse of land beyond the wall was Titan free and theirs for the taking. Levi, inspired by Erwin's dedication and seeing the visions of his friends in that as well, decides to stay with the Survey Corps.

You can read about the rest of Levi's involvement in the plot here.

Abilities:

Levi has been repeatedly named Humanity's Strongest; out of all the soldiers in the Survey Corps, he stands out as the strongest and fastest. He's the best at using the 3-D Maneuver Gear and has an incredibly high kill count. It's also worth noting that Levi is a grade-A neat freak and dislikes dirt and grime. This wouldn't normally be considered an ability, but due to his intensity about the subject, it becomes one.

For exact statistics, go here.

First Person:

[ 'He seems to be alive, at least.'

'Dirty, too.'

The change from forest to train was abrupt, startling, and completely unwelcome. One moment, Levi's zipping through trees with a slimy Eren Jaeger in tow, and the next he's sitting on an uncomfortable seat with weapons drawn and leg throbbing. Eyes wide, chest heaving, Levi stares at his surroundings in complete shock. ]

The hell is this-

[ Did he die? That's the only reasonable explanation, though he was almost entirely positive that when you're dead, you're dead. There's no weird metal thing moving quickly through a foggy landscape (until there is). Standing up, posture tense, Levi awkwardly makes his way through the space, barely stopping himself from falling flat on his face as the train halts with a lurch. Carefully making his way down the steps (and damn, did his leg hate him for that), Levi paused.

What the fuck was this bullshit. ]

Accidental Video:

[ Feeling the unfamiliar weight of the watch in his pocket, Levi takes it out, giving the watch a blank look. He didn't own a watch, so where the hell had this come from? Uneasily, he opens it, accidentally flicking on the video function. For a few seconds, he locks the object with a critical look before turning his gaze away to better look at his surroundings.

All in all, it's a boring video. I mean, he doesn't even talk. He just sort of looks at stuff.

After a minute and a half of this, he simultaneously closes the watch and begins limping away. Where is unknown; after all, the feed cut out a few seconds ago. ]

Third Person:

"Alright you brats, listen up."

Levi glared at the conglomerate of cadets in front of him, expression as blank and drawn as ever. It looked like this was literally the last place on earth Levi wanted to be; and honestly, it probably was. Nothing said 'wasted afternoon' like telling the new kids the what's-what and the who's-who of the Survey Corps. He didn't do this, really; sure, he interacted with the troops on some level, but this whole initiation into the realities of it all was more of an Erwin thing.

No one liked to be told they're probably going to die by a short man with no filter.

"Here's what's going to happen. You're going to join the guard. You're going to sit on top of that wall and you're going to do jack-shit. The lot of you who have the chance are going to join the military police, and there you're going to sit and be useless for the rest of your career. And some of you are going to join the Survey Corps. And you're going to die."

The crowd shifted, murmuring between themselves. Levi's frown deepened.

"Shut the fuck up. Did I say I was done?"

All of the cadets paused.

"This is towards to any of you who are dumb enough to join the Corps:

You are not a coward. You are not a weakling. And you above all will be remembered for being worth something while the rest of your friends are left to deal with the fact that they did nothing. Because that's what the Survey Corps is; it's fighting for a chance to be the change that everyone else decided they didn't want. You're fighting for humanity and they're sitting on their asses.

"Fuck the Military Police and fuck the Wall. You're a soldier. Fucking act like it."

Levi doesn't care to find out how many stay and how many go. Turning on a heel, he walks off stage, avoiding the eyes of anyone nearby. He hated this part. Erwin owed him.
